Speak to Texans without the twang
Texas-centric name that can go nationwide
A system of names for their six beers

Our client challenged us to create a true Texas mystique for their new craft beers. (“We want to be the Shiner of craft breweries” was their directive to us.) It was important to the brewmaster, a Texas native himself, that the new name should appeal to beer drinkers in an authentic, not kitschy, way.

Critter-based naming system
Texas animals — real and mythical
Each label tells a story

The new name, Nine-Band Brewing Co., honors the state mammal of Texas, the nine-banded armadillo. The name sidesteps Texas clichés such as cowboy hats, lone stars, and the Texas state flag, and instead embraces a symbol known foremost by born-and-bred Texans. The name created opportunities graphically, and lent itself to a naming system.

Nine-Band Pale Ale

The flagship brew. Made with premium Liberty hops, and deserving of the Nine-Band name — honoring a state mascot and true Texas original.

Ghost Cow Oktoberfest

A classic Märzenbier, this full-bodied brew finds its namesake in an apocryphal animal said to roam the desolate back roads of South Texas.

June Bug Summer Wheat

True Texans know to expect June bugs when the weather warms up. This summer symbol serves as inspiration for this light, refreshing brew.

Cactus Cat Kölsch

Made in the classic German tradition, this crisp brew celebrates the legendary Cactus Cat, said by old-timers to enjoy fermented prickly pear cactus juice.

Toad Choker Barley Wine

Ask any longtime Texan: A toad choker is a gully-washing rainstorm. Not to mention the perfect analog for this potent, thirst-quenching ale.

Hoop Snake Hefeweizen

This rich, creamy ale finds its inspiration in West Texas, where the legendary Hoop Snake is said to bite its own tail, then roll across the plains.

Blue Lacy Brown Ale

With its toasty honey malt notes, this brown ale pays tribute to the official dog of Texas, the Blue Lacy, known for hunting and herding.
